Treatment
Before surgery, an x-ray will be taken to get a better idea of what your mouth looks like. You will be given general anesthesia where you will be sedated to alleviate the pain. A simple extraction involves a tooth that is visible and can be performed by your dentist. A forceps tool is used to loosen and then extract the tooth.
A surgical extraction involves removing a tooth that has not yet protruded from the gums. Your specialist will make a small cut into your gums. Then, they will remove the bone around the tooth for extraction.
What Happens After an Extraction?
We recommend heeding the advice of your specialist including taking any prescribed medications and antibiotics. Typically, anti-inflammatory drugs will relieve pain after a tooth has been extracted.
An ice pack should be put on your face for 20-minute periods to reduce swelling. You should eat soft and cool foods for several days following the extraction. As always, make follow-up appointments so we can check your progress!
